Summary of Paper 2

The author of “Similarities Between Narco Corridos & Trap/Gangsta Rap” wrote this paper with the intent of showing how the two genres of music are parallel. The paper discussed the drug use of many artist, how they’re spending their wealth, and the content used in music videos. The author even described the two genres as the cousins in the music industry. It has become extremely popular for rap artist to talk openly about their drug use, how much money they make and the things they spend it on. Furthermore, their influence on new comers to participate in order to fit in or succeed in the industry. I have never listened to Narco Corridos genre of music but after reading the paper I can see that is very similar to what I am use to hearing in trap music. “Even though these two genres attract different age, and race groups, it’s shocking to say that the use of drugs, alcohol, and money have brought these styles of music closer than ever.”

Summary of Paper 1

After reading the paper by Lissbeath, I found myself emotional as I faced the hard truth of the rap industry of today’s society. The author made key points like the influence rap music has on how women are treated and viewed by others and how they feel about themselves. I personally have seen the ideal of “beauty” alter by what is popular in music videos and how high the pedestal is for women who fit the image. Women often go through life threatening challenges to look like what artists consider beautiful. That action alone has lowered many women self-esteem while the aggressive and demeaning language spoken to them make them feel even lower. Its disheartening because it has begun to affect how we treat other women. I personally have experienced being valued and chosen because of the texture of my hair or the wideness of my hips or lips. The author also made a point to expose how the lyrics frequently demean a woman’s role in society by presenting them as sexual objects and by encouraging rape and abuse toward women. I believe this to be true because we seem useless in the work place and only valued as a sexual being.

Topic: If you were a parent of a 10-year-old kid, would you let them use the social media app Tik Tok? Give 1-3 specific reasons why your answer is either yes or no.

I am a firm believer of the phrase “people will find a way to do what they want to do”. So as a parent of a ten year old kid, I would allow them access to the social media application “Tik Tok” under certain stipulations. My main reason of allowing them access is to create a healthy, trusting relationship with my child. I would want them to be honest with me and trust me enough to come to me about things at all times. So I would create boundaries and expectations for maintaining their social media account and teach them how to be safe and responsible on the internet before the account is made. Another reason I would allow them access is to avoid them feeling like they have to sneak and do it rather than having an open line of communication. Growing up, there are certain things my parents did not allow me to do but I did them anyway without them knowing–like creating a Facebook at 9 years old. It caused many conflicts in my household and I would want to avoid those mistakes my parents made as I become a better parent myself. I wouldn’t consider allowing them access to the app, “letting them do what they want,” I view it as making a teachable moment out of something they desire to have.

Topic: Do you think that the news media should spend so much time reporting when a famous person dies or do you think that they should spend that time reporting on other things? Give two main points to explain your answer.

The news is an outlet that is expected to report current events on a national level. Whether it is the death of a celebrity or an issue with the president, I believe the news should report all information so citizens are aware of what’s happening. In most recent news, basketball star Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash. Most believe the news spending time reporting his death was unnecessary but lets face facts, Kobe has made an impact in many people lives far beyond basketball. For example, he has helped his community tremendously throughout his 20 year career. He has even inspired and influenced more than half of the new generation basketball stars with his dedication to being successful. His death affected many people on different  levels so the news reporting details allowed the public to grieve, pray, support and uplift his family and legacy. Secondly, the news should always remain open to reporting all information as it may affect different people in different ways. Issues that are important to some may not be as important to others but remaining open and reporting everything equally will be considered reporting current events. This will ensure that citizens are up to speed of everything that is happening in the world.

Topic: Should it be mandatory that high school students take a World Religions class before they graduate? Give two reasons.

I believe it is absolutely necessary for high school students to complete a course that focus on World Religion in order to graduate. To function in society, having a solid foundation of religion and an understanding of others’ is important. Growing up as a child, religion was always forced on me. I never really understood, until I was an adult, who I was praying to and what to pray about–but I went with the religion I was introduced to. Incorporating a course of such will give students the opportunity to learn about new religions and gain respect of other religions– even if they do not agree. Furthermore, it provides them the opportunity to find one that closely aligns their personal beliefs instead of following one their family forced on them. In addition to, religion plays a role in history, literature, and current events. Religious conflict between different religions or branches of the same faith, regularly plays a role in the news. How can anyone understand what’s happening in the world without basic knowledge of world religions? Providing students with this opportunity will give them the tools they need to build a solid foundation to function in society.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
